Ontario Report Cards
Ontario Report Card Templates for Ontario Communication of Learning, Grades 1-6 and Grades 7-8 were updated by the Ministry of Education in the fall of 2023. Changes to the template include:
- Language is no longer strand based
- History and Geography now have separate comment boxes
- Early Reading Screening results have been added
- Changes to the footer
Edsby’s Ontario report card input templates and print templates have been updated to support the above changes. Details are provided below.
Language
Strand based reporting has been removed. The input template will reflect this change and will only have the Overall grade with checkboxes for ESL/ELD; IEP and NA
History/Geography
History and Geography subjects now have comment space that is specifically for each subject
Early Reading Screening
On the Ontario 1-6 print template (snap 1) and the Ontario Communication of Learning print template (snap 2), we have added the Early Reading Screening area so it matches the Ministry template. At this time we are not pulling in any information to print, as we understand, Boards will not be ready to report for term 1. We will default the NA checkbox to be selected.
Footer
The footer has been updated to reflect the new form number for each template and to identify King’s Printer.
Templates and Comment Lengths
Edsby has made the changes in the standard Ontario 1-6, 7-8 and Communication of Learning input and print templates. We have been testing the character counts for each of the subject areas to see that standard input templates should fit. Characters are proportional 9 point arial font and each character is a different size. Because of this it is not an exact number of characters that take up the same amount of space. We usually err on the side of caution, however there may be circumstances where a comment may need to be adjusted to fit within the space allocated. Below are the character counts for each input template.

There are 3 ways that Edsby can configure a Standard Ontario Progress Report:
- Set comment length method (2 options)
- Subject specific method
Note: Progress Reports are not intended to have a full comment for each subject. The total subject comment box size will fit approximately 3100 characters. Remember this is a shared box for all subjects being reported.

Using one of the set comment length methods provides the flexibility for teachers to comment on each subject, however the possibility to go over is greater if many teachers are reporting on a class.

Using the subject method allows to limit the subject comment size while still allowing the flexibility for teachers to provide a fulsome comment.
